  15. Elsewhere  in this issue you'll find an article going on about lists and
  16. stuff, one of them is "Fave Music" or something, I thought I'd expand on
  17. it  by going through all the tracks and albums that I really like and go
  18. out of my way to listen to:

  20. Van Halen - 1984:
  21. =================
  22. This album is one of the first that I ever bought when I got my first CD
  23. player, it was stolen when I was burgled and I bought it again, I listen
  24. to  it  just  about every day while testing a CD-Player I'm writing, and
  25. I'm listening to it now.
  26.  
  27. I  love  this album, it's mainly down to the crazy VH style at that time
  28. and  the  vocals  of David Lee Roth which haven't changed a bit over the
  29. years.   Roth in my opinion was responsible for getting Eddie Van Halens
  30. awesome  guitar  talent  into  the  limelight, I think without him Eddie
  31. would have just been another talented guitarist with a group.

  33. The  tracks  that  really make it for me though are "Panama", "Drop Dead
  34. Legs" and of course, "Hot for Teacher", which I think everyone must have
  35. heard  of,  if you haven't where have you been?  I can't imagine a world
  36. without Dave Lee Roth, it would have to be a very drab and drearly place
  37. indeed!

  39. David Lee Roth - Various Tracks:
  40. ================================
  41. Staying  on the DLR theme, I bought albums like Skyscraper and what have
  42. you  because  the  music  was so damned funky.  Groups like ugly Kid Joe
  43. have  managed  to take it one step further but there's no substitute for
  44. great tracks like "Paradise",  "Yankee Rose", "Goin' Crazy" and that ace
  45. cover of "California Girls", another famoue track.
  46.  
  47. Later  albums  proved just as cool as ever, although I never got to hear
  48. the latest one.  Stuff like "A Little Ain't Enough" and "Sensible Shoes"
  49. show  that  Roth  is capable of all walks of music, as long as they have
  50. that  wacky  touch to them.  I loved it so much I went to see DLR at the
  51. NEC years ago, it was an experience I'll never forget!

  53. Ugly Kid Joe - "Everything About You":
  54. ======================================
  55. This  is  one  of  those tracks that just smacks of early Roth, but they
  56. managed  to  add a more punchy beat to it that he would have done and so
  57. it grabbed my attention straight away, I rushed out and bought the album
  58. "America's  Least  Wanted"  on  the strength of this track alone and I'm
  59. glad  as hell I did!  I should also make mention of "Panhandlin' Prince"
  60. which  when  I  first heard it was a load of cack, but it's one of those
  61. that  grows  on  you.  "Goddamn Devil" is another classic that has me on
  62. the air guitar, but strangely I don't play "Cats in the Cradel" anywhere
  63. near as much as I used to.
  64.  
  65. Green Day - "Dookie":
  66. =====================
  67. A  wicked album that I reviewed in an early issue of The Word because it
  68. was  such  a  wild departure for me, I saw "Welcome to Paradise" on TOTP
  69. one  time  and  got  this  on tape to hear the rest.  Dookie are a weird
  70. group, they're kinda like The Jam crossed with the Sex Pistols, you just
  71. have to listen to it to understand it!

  73. Tracks to listen to?  "Welcome to Paradise", "Wasting Your Time", and
  74. the bizarre "Pulling Teeth".

  76. Skid Row - Various Tracks:
  77. ==========================
  78. Skid  Row  are my favourite group these days, the only group I've always
  79. listened to.  They've got the image of being a band of hard-nosed, drunk
  80. and doped-up punks, but most people don't know that they've written some
  81. of  the  most  poetic  and powerful ballards ever, for example:  "Wasted
  82. Time",  "I  Remember  You"  (always  makes  me feel sad), and "Quicksand
  83. Jesus".

  85. Granted,  Skid  Row  have always had the emphasis on hard and very heavy
  86. music,  tracks like "Monkey Business", "Piece of Me" (which they sang in
  87. LA  as  Seb  Bach  jumped  into  the crowd to punch some guy who threw a
  88. bottle  at  him, cutting his head, requiring several stitches), "Get the
  89. F*ck  Out"  and the slightly-poppish (IMO) "Youth Gone Wild", but all of
  90. the  songs  have  a hidden meaning in there, even if it's just "f*ck the
  91. system", you just have to find it.

  93. I went to see Skid Row at Milton Keynes with Bon Jovi (the *first* time)
  94. Vixen and Europe, I got burnt to shit but it was 100% worth it.
  95.  
  96. Blitzkreig Bop - The Ramones
  97. ============================
  98. What  a  song!  I love this song!  I got hooked on the Skid Row cover of
  99. it  (on  the video "Oh say can you scream") but the original Ramones one
  100. is even better! Hey, ho, lets go!
  101.  
  102. Ozzy Osbourne - Various Tracks:
  103. ===============================
  104. Ozzy  who?  Actually Oz was back in the charts last year sometime with a
  105. track called "No More Tears" which quite suprised me, I thought it was a
  106. bit  too  heavy  for that sort of thing but it only goes to show eh?  Oz
  107. has been around and writing excellent music since Day 1 of Black Sabbath
  108. and  "Paranoid"  which, if you can find a decently-recorded version - is
  109. STILL, after ALL these years, an excellent track.

  111. I  do  prefer  the  newer stuff, like "Miracle Man" which takes the piss
  112. fairly and squarley out of Jimmy Stewart - an Envangalist who was caught
  113. coming  out  of  a  whorehouse, and my all-time favourite "Crazy Train".
  114. Sadly Randy Rhoades who originally played it is dead, and IMO I think he
  115. was  the  only  person  who could actually play it properly, nobody else
  116. seems  to  be  able to.  Get the "Randy Rhoades Tribute" Album which has
  117. also  got  the  acoustic  instrumental "Dee" on it somewhere, written by
  118. Randy for his wife Delores.

  120. Yup,  I've  seen Oz too, again at the Birmingham NEC, I was sat right at
  121. the  back and couldn't see f*ck all, but that was okay cos' I could sure
  122. as hell hear him!

  124. Bon Jovi - Various Tracks:
  125. ==========================
  126. Ooops!   Bugger!  Okay I confess, I actually like the odd Bon Jove track
  127. these days and even went to see them several tines in my impetuous youth
  128. at  places like the NEC and Milton Keynes Bowl.  Say what you like but I
  129. still think "Wanted Dead or Alive" is a damned cool track.
  130.  
  131. I  also like "Bad Medicine" because it's a fun song, it was made to sing
  132. along  to  and  so  you  do, but then I also like "Ride Cowboy Ride" and
  133. "Blaze of Glory".  "Living in Sin" ranks quite high too, there are those
  134. who  say  that  BJ write far too many ballads, and I'm inclined to agree
  135. with  them,  I  think that's ALL they write, it's just that some of them
  136. are pretty good!

  138. Stairway to Heaven, Highway to Hell:
  139. ====================================
  140. This  is  a  compilation  album  that I had before it was stolen in that
  141. burglary,  it comprosed a collection of cover versions of tracks done by
  142. people  who  had  died  because  of  drugs,  here's  some of the songs I
  143. remember from it:

  145.     Skid Row - Holidays in the Sun (Sex Pistols)
  146.     Ozzy Osbourne - Purple Haze (Jimmy Hendrix)
  147.     Some russian band - Our Generation (The Who)
  148.     Bon Jovi - The Boys are Back in Town (Thin Lizzy)

  150. plus  loads  of  others, if anyone has got this on CD and is prepared to
  151. sell  it then I'll take yer bloody hand off!  I've got a tenner here for
  152. it if you'll sell it to me!
